In Belgium, the cheapest unlimited mobile plan is Mobile Vikings at €29/month, on the Proximus network. But before paying for unlimited, a useful truth: since 2022, "unlimited" means at least 300 GB at full speed, not infinity. And most heavy users never reach that cap. An "unlimited" mobile plan in Belgium is, by law, a plan that offers at least 300 GB at full speed, under the rule set by the IBPT (the Belgian telecom regulator) in 2022. Beyond that threshold, the operator slows the speed rather than cutting the connection. The word does not promise an infinite volume: it guarantees a very large allowance before throttling. For a heavy data user, that's exactly the nuance that decides whether unlimited is worth the price.

What is an "unlimited" mobile plan in Belgium?

It's a plan offering at least 300 GB at full speed. Since an IBPT decision in 2022, an operator can only use the word "unlimited" if the customer keeps maximum speed up to 300 GB, or if the offer is technically 100% without limit.

Before this rule, any plan with 20 GB could advertise itself as "unlimited" with a hidden fair use clause. The IBPT ruled in February 2022 to end this misleading marketing (Droit & Technologies, 2022). The result: a plan sold as "unlimited" in 2026 necessarily gives you at least 300 GB at full speed.

In practice, 300 GB is roughly 100 hours of HD video streaming a month, or three hours a day. It's a volume very few mobile subscribers reach, unless they go entirely without home wifi.

Which operator has the cheapest unlimited plan?

Mobile Vikings, at €29/month on the Proximus network, with unlimited calls and texts. It's the most affordable plan labelled unlimited on the Belgian market in June 2026, well ahead of the legacy operators.

The gap with the major operators comes from their list price. Orange Go Extreme (renamed Mobile Unlimited) offers 300 GB at full speed for €33/month for 12 months, but rises to €47/month afterwards (Mon-Abonnement-Gsm, June 2026). Proximus Mobilus Unlimited shows €34.99/month, but only for 6 months, before a higher full price. The promo wins on the first bill, then the real price settles in.

For context: the average mobile plan in Belgium costs €22/month, about 50% more than in France (Comparateur.be, 2026). So an unlimited plan at €29 has a cost, but stays reasonable against the €47 of an Orange plan off-promo.

Do you really need unlimited, or is 300 GB enough?

For almost every use, no: a 100 to 300 GB plan is enough and costs less. Unlimited only makes sense if you use your phone as your only home connection, permanently tethering to a computer or a console.

The reason is simple: 300 GB is already huge. Lycamobile offers 300 GB for €15/month on the Telenet network, half the price of an "official" unlimited plan, for a volume most heavy users never exceed. Paying the unlimited premium to use 120 GB is like renting a truck to carry a suitcase.

How much data does a heavy user consume per month?

Between 50 and 150 GB for typical intensive use. Video streaming weighs the most: about 3 GB per hour in HD, 7 GB in 4K. Add online gaming, video on social media and app updates.

A subscriber watching two hours of HD video a day on mobile uses about 180 GB a month. You really have to combine constant streaming and tethering to cross the 300 GB line. Hence the value of checking your history before choosing.

Does tethering change the equation?

Yes, it's the factor that tips you towards unlimited. Connecting a laptop, a console or a TV to the phone's hotspot multiplies consumption: a household without wifi can exceed 100 GB a month on remote work and big-screen streaming alone.

If your mobile plan replaces your internet box, unlimited or a 300 GB plan becomes coherent. Just check that the operator allows tethering at no extra cost, which is the norm for Belgian unlimited plans, but not always on entry-level ones.

What happens after the 300 GB cap?

The connection stays active, but speed drops to 512 kbps, that is 0.5 Mbps. At that rate, you can still check your email and load a web page, but HD video streaming and online gaming become uncomfortable until the next bill.

This degradation comes from the fair use policy the IBPT enforces. The operator does not charge overage and does not cut you off: it throttles. That's precisely why the 300 GB threshold matters more than the word "unlimited": beyond it, your plan turns back into a low-speed backup.

For a heavy user, the real question is therefore not "unlimited or not", but "am I likely to exceed 300 GB?". If the answer is no, a cheaper 300 GB plan does the same job without the premium.

Does "truly unlimited" exist in Belgium?

Hardly at all on consumer mobile. The IBPT rule allows an "unlimited" label for a 100% limitless offer, but in practice all operators rely on the 300 GB threshold and the throttling that follows. No common residential mobile plan offers maximum speed beyond that volume in June 2026.
