eSIM in Belgium: which operators offer it?

Yes, most major Belgian operators offer eSIM: Proximus, Orange, Base and Telenet, but also Mobile Vikings, Lycamobile and DIGI activate it on smartphones. You get it as a QR code online, with no plastic card and no store visit. One caveat, though: an eSIM changes neither your network nor your coverage. Here is who offers it, how to activate it, and when it is actually worth it.

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card, built directly into the phone. Instead of inserting a plastic chip, you load a profile from a QR code. The number, the plan and the operator stay identical to a classic SIM: only the format changes. The benefit is twofold: activating a line in minutes, and running two numbers on a single device.

What is an eSIM, and how does it differ from a SIM card?

An eSIM is a SIM built into the phone: no chip to insert, a profile loaded from a QR code. Functionally, nothing changes (same number, same plan, same network). What changes is that you install it remotely and can stack several on a compatible device.

In practice, your operator sends a QR code instead of an envelope with a chip to punch out. You scan it, the profile installs, the line goes live. The chip itself is soldered into the phone at the factory: the manufacturer built it in, and the operator merely writes your subscription onto it.

Compatibility caught up fast. iPhones support eSIM since the XS and XR (2018), Samsung Galaxy since the S20, Google Pixel since the 3. Most mid- and high-end smartphones sold in Belgium since 2020 handle it. Entry-level or non-European imports are the occasional exception: the reflex is to open the settings (the "add plan" menu) before ordering.

Which Belgian operators offer eSIM in 2026?

All four major networks offer eSIM on smartphones: Proximus, Orange, Base and Telenet. Among alternatives, Mobile Vikings, Lycamobile and DIGI activate it too. Tadaam launched an "eSIM only" plan in April 2026, and Hey! announced it would offer one within the year.

In other words, eSIM is no longer a premium exclusive: it now covers almost the entire Belgian mobile market, from incumbents to MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators, which lease a big operator's network). The real filter is no longer the operator but your phone. One detail still sets the players apart: Telenet is the only one in Belgium to offer eSIM for a smartwatch (Apple Watch and equivalents), while the others keep it to smartphones and tablets.

Grid checked in July 2026 on the operators' sites and Astel.be. Prepaid availability varies by plan: DIGI, for example, offers no prepaid at all.

How do you activate an eSIM with a Belgian operator?

Activation happens online, with no store visit. You order or request an eSIM from your account, you receive a QR code, you scan it with the phone camera, and the profile installs. Expect anywhere from a few minutes to two hours depending on the operator.

At Proximus, after an online subscription, the QR code arrives by email within two hours; it also appears in My Proximus (via computer) and in the Proximus+ app. At Orange, one of the first Belgian operators to launch eSIM, you install it by scanning the QR code from the My Orange app. The principle is the same everywhere: one code, one scan, a live line.

The surprise for some: the QR code does not always appear instantly. If you place an order on a Sunday evening, it can take a few hours to generate. Nothing blocking, but do not count on activating your line the second you click, especially outside business hours.

Can you have two numbers on one phone with eSIM?

Yes, if your smartphone supports dual SIM. You combine a physical SIM and an eSIM (or two eSIMs on recent models) to run two numbers at once on the same device. This is the most concrete use of eSIM in Belgium.

The typical case: a freelancer or an employee who wants to separate a work line from a personal one without carrying two phones. The physical SIM keeps the long-standing personal number, the eSIM takes the new work line. Both ring on the same device, each with its own plan, its own bill, and even its own operator if you want. You choose, call by call, which line to use.

The other winning scenario is travel: keeping your Belgian eSIM active for calls and adding a local or tourist eSIM for data, without pulling out a single chip. Again, it all fits in one phone.

Is an eSIM more expensive than a SIM card?

No, not per month. The plan is identical: an eSIM is the same subscription as on a plastic card. The only possible expense is an activation or replacement fee when you request a new profile (for example when switching phones). That amount depends on the operator and the plan, and it is not always free: check the price list before ordering.

Can you use an eSIM on prepaid?

Sometimes. Mobile Vikings, for instance, offers eSIM including on prepaid, with fast activation. DIGI, on the other hand, sells no prepaid plan at all, so no prepaid eSIM either. If you want a no-commitment prepaid eSIM, confirm the operator you have in mind allows it: not all do, and availability shifts plan by plan.

eSIM and network coverage: what does not change at your address

An eSIM neither improves nor degrades your network. It uses exactly the same antennas as the plastic card of the same operator. Your coverage therefore still depends on the operator you choose and on your address, never on the card technology.

This is a point marketing sheets happily leave in the shade. Switching to eSIM at Base does not make you receive better than with a Base SIM: it is the Base network, full stop. A Mobile Vikings eSIM runs on the Proximus network, because Mobile Vikings is an MVNO hosted by Proximus. A DIGI eSIM roams on Proximus everywhere DIGI's own network is not yet deployed, which remains common in 2026 outside major cities.

Put plainly: choosing eSIM is a choice of setup convenience, not a choice of network quality. What do you do with your eSIM when you change phones?

This is the painful part of eSIM. You do not move it by pulling a card out of one device and slipping it into another. You must request a new profile (a new QR code) from your account, then install it on the new phone. One more step than with a plastic chip.

On iPhone, Proximus offers a Quick Transfer feature that simplifies moving from one Apple device to another, without going back through customer service. Handy, but limited to the Apple ecosystem. For an iPhone-to-Android move, or between two Android phones, the general rule stands: new request, new QR code, reinstallation. Plan for this step on the day you change phones, or you risk a few hours with no active line.

Does an eSIM work abroad?

Yes, like a classic SIM. Your Belgian eSIM keeps "roam like at home" within the European Union, on the same terms as your plan on a plastic card. The card format plays no role in roaming. The eSIM advantage while travelling lies elsewhere: adding a local data eSIM without removing your Belgian eSIM, so your usual number stays reachable.

eSIM or SIM card: who is eSIM worth it for?

An eSIM is a real plus if you want to activate quickly online, run two numbers on one phone, or travel without juggling chips. It adds little if you change devices often or if you like moving your card from one phone to another in ten seconds.

For a freelancer splitting work and personal, for someone moving in who wants a line live the same day, or for a regular traveller, eSIM ticks the right boxes. For a user who often lends their phone, tinkers with old devices, or changes mobile every six months, the plastic card stays more flexible: pull it out, put it back, with no new QR code to request.
